Natural cleaning tips for pets

Fortunately, there are homemade remedies you can use to clean your home, and they’re completely natural . Here are some harmless, natural alternatives to using toxic chemicals to clean your house. If you follow these tips, it will be easy to keep your pets and the home they live in clean and safe from toxins. You can keep many of the ingredients on hand and mix them in small batches as needed.

For spills and accidents:

Club Soda: Scrub the area quickly with club soda and let it dry.

Baking Soda: Sprinkle baking soda on a spilled carpet and let it sit for about an hour before vacuuming.

Vinegar and Water: After cleaning a carpet or hard surface, deodorize the area with a 1 tablespoon vinegar and 2 cups water solution.

Salt, white vinegar, and borax: For heavier carpet stains, mix 2 tablespoons of salt, ½ cup of white vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of borax until dissolved. Soak an old rag in the mixture and rub the stain. Once the solution has dried, you can vacuum up any remaining residue.

White vinegar, lemon juice, and water: For stained hard floors, combine 1/2 cup white vinegar with 1/4 cup lemon juice and half a bucket of warm water to make a non-toxic floor cleaner.

Before the bath:

Baking Soda and Baby Powder: Sprinkle the mixture onto your pet’s fur and rub it in with your hands. Gently brush to distribute the mixture throughout the coat until it’s gone. This combination works like a natural dry shampoo!

Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap: Mix 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 tablespoon liquid soap in a bucket. Bathe your dog with the mixture to rid your pet of skunk odor. Be sure to avoid your pet’s eyes, nose, and mouth!

Grooming Mitt: You can purchase a grooming mitt to preventatively remove loose hair from your dog or cat before it gets all over your floor. Simply pet your dog with the mitt on in an outdoor area. You can also use the mitt to naturally remove fur from furniture!

Flea comb: Use a flea comb to naturally remove fleas from your pet. You can purchase flea combs that work on fleas, eggs, and larvae. Don’t brush your dog’s hair with narrow teeth if it’s matted or tangled.

Oatmeal, baking soda, and water: Oatmeal shampoo can be used for dry, itchy skin. Grind the oatmeal in a food processor until it forms a fine powder. Mix 1 cup of powdered oatmeal, ½ cup of baking soda, and 1 quart of warm water until well combined. When it’s time for a bath, lather your pet with the oatmeal, wait 5 minutes, then rinse and dry!

For everyday cleaning:

Baking Soda for Pet Beds : Sprinkle it on your dog or cat’s bed. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly to eliminate pet bed odor.

Baking Soda for Cat Litter: Sprinkle baking soda into your cat’s litter box before adding litter to help control odors between litter changes.

Dishwashing liquid, tea tree oil, and water: Mix 2 cups of water with 3 tablespoons of liquid soap and about 25 drops of tea tree oil. This makes a non-toxic kitchen and bathroom cleaner—or even for the inside of your toilet! Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Baking soda, distilled water, and essential oil: Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 cup of distilled water and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. Place the solution in a small spray bottle for a non-toxic pet odor neutralizer.

Vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and water: Fill a spray bottle with 1 cup vinegar, ¼ cup peroxide, and 1 teaspoon each of dish soap and water. Spray for a bathroom and toilet bowl cleaner.
